CoCo Vandeweghe made her return to professional tennis on July 22nd at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. The San Diego Aviators superstar returned to the court following a seven-month layoff while recovering from an ankle injury. She looked like her old self and showed flashes of brilliance against 2018 WTT Female MVP, Philadelphia FreedomsTaylor Townsend in Women’s Singles.

“Playing this summer was a great relaunching pad for my comeback to tennis,” Vandeweghe said. “I was out for a while due to some injuries, so getting thrown into a competitive match against Taylor Townsend, whose an incredible player, was a great way to rebuild my strength.”

Vandeweghe broke Townsend in the opening game and kept her off balance with her powerful groundstrokes. With the home crowd cheering her on, Vandeweghe came through with a hard-fought 5-3 win to cut the Freedoms lead to 18-12.

“Taylor is a tricky player so I had to hit through my shots to make sure I had a chance and luckily for me I was able to come out with the singles win against her,” Vandeweghe said.

Fans of CoCo can expect her to continue to play in front of her hometown fans for years to come.

“The WTT format is awesome to play in, I’ve made it a priority every summer to play at home in front of my family and friends in San Diego,” she said. “I love how quick the sets are, it suits my game because I’m able to get into the games quickly.”
