3.0 DIVISION:
Five teams made their way to California with their eye on the 3.0 Division prize and would play 4 round robin matches throughout the weekend to determine a champion. Of the four matches played on Friday, Fresno Tennis Club, of Kingsburg, Calif., came out of the gates strong collecting wins in their first two contests. However, in their first match on Saturday, they met the other undefeated team in the division ÔÇô Serve-Aces, of Cary, N.C. ÔÇô for an afternoon matchup. In the end, Serve-Aces overcame Fresno 36-17 and went on to win their final match on Sunday against Gossen, of St. Louis, to capture their first national title. Led by captain Cindy Winzenz, other winning team members included Kent Lawrence, Jane Limkakeng, Keerthi Venkataramanan and Andrew Winzenz, all of Cary, N.C.; and Emily Childs, Fuquay Varina, N.C.
3.5 DIVISION:
In the 3.5 Division, six teams faced off in a five-match round robin playoff with a year-end title on the line. Casual Sets, of Des Moines, Iowa, scraped by with a one-point win in their first match, defeating Smurfs, of Hawthorne, N.J. Casual Sets went on to collect wins against Lawrence, of Cary, N.C.; Racquetship, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and Victorious Secret, of Murray, Utah, over Saturday and Sunday to take their championship fate into their own hands for Sunday. With one more opponent in between their team and their first Nationals title, Casual Sets dismissed Serve Aces Por Favor, of Glen, Allen, Va., 31-17 to solidify their undefeated record and their division win. Led by captain Brandon Willett, other titlist teammates included Robert Stinnett, Des Moines, Iowa; Wayne Goedken, Dawn Ver Steeg, Matthew Morgan and Rachel Morgan, all of Ankeny, Iowa; Lee Johnson, West Des Moines, Iowa; and Barbara Sedgley, Urbandale, Iowa.
4.0 DIVISION:
With six teams vying for the title in the 4.0 Division, teams knew the competition would be tough to overcome but five wins would earn them a title. Starting off with a convincing 33-18 win against Beach Breakers, of Virginia Beach, Va., Frame No Shame, of Tustin, Calif., set the tone for the remainder of the weekend. Frame No Shame went on to capture their second victory on Friday afternoon in their closest contest of the weekend versus Team Ostander, of Apex, N.C. With three more matches between Frame No Shame and division dominance, they went on to post three more double-digit wins to go undefeated on the weekend and earn their first Nationals title. Led by captain Andrew Chen, other first time champions included Eric Ballestros, Usama Shahid and Robert Soukaseume, all of Anaheim, Calif.; Katia Brambila, Bell, Calif.; Sarah Cheah, La Habra, Calif.; Sharen Chorn, Fountain Valley, Calif.; Joanne Le, Buena Park, Calif.
4.5 DIVISION:
Six teams traveled to Indian Wells, Calif., with a Nationals title on their mind, but only one would rise above the rest in the 4.5 Division. In one of the more competitive fields of the weekend, teams demonstrated early Friday that they would not go down without a fight. Two Chances, of Urbandale, Iowa, would get their first win versus MotherFugers, of Kansas City, Mo., but then lost a close one in their second matchup against Capital District Smash, of Schenectady, N.Y. Two Chances would rally to win two more matches on Saturday while their biggest threat to that point, MotherFugers, lost a second match, effectively making the Sunday match for Two Chances a must-win. In their final contest of the tournament, Two Chances faced off with Topspin Club Soda, of Chino Hills, Calif., which had only one loss to that point. In a nail-biter, Two Chances was able to narrowly escape Topspin Club Soda 29-28 to claim their fourth victory and earn their first Nationals championship. Led by captain Terri Dial, other winning team members included Lara Farley (Geer), Waukee, Iowa; Andrew Hubbell, Des Moines, Iowa; Lynette Lamb-Brown, West Des Moines, Iowa; Gil Nichols, Grimes, Iowa; and Tylor Schlader, Ankeny, Iowa.
SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:
In the Senior 3.5 Division, six teams suited up during the final tournament of the year to try to win the 2017 Mylan WTT title. After six matches were played on Friday, it looked as though Namaste‘nnis, of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., and Purple Rain, of St. Louis, were the teams to beat. On Saturday, both squads would go on to win their morning match and were scheduled to play each other in the afternoon. Purple Rain‘s undefeated reign would end when they met Namaste‘nnis, losing 35-18. With only one more obstacle to face ahead of a champion being named, Namaste‘nnis won their final match against Ace Gang to secure their fifth win and the division championship. Led by non-playing captain Donald Yee, other title winners included Lulu Liu, both of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; Bobby Choe, Tenafly, N.J.; Sherry Shan, Montville, N.J.; Haiging Tang, Fort Lee, N.J.; Ying Fang Tsai, Old Tappan, N.J.; Andre Yang, Livingston, N.J.; and Ling Zhang, Florham Park, N.J.
SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION:
Six teams entered the weekend for a shot at the Senior 4.0 Division title with only five round robin matches to prove they were supreme. Both 80/35, of Grimes, Iowa, and Evergreen 4.0, of Long Valley, N.J., collected two wins each on Friday to make them the teams to beat heading into Saturday and Sunday. However, after falling to 80/35 in a close second match, Cinnamon Fire, of San Diego, came back to win three straight in the final two days of the tournament, ending with a narrow 31-27 win over Evergreen 4.0 to capture the title. Led by captain Albert Alagata, other first-time titlists included Debbie Fitzgerald, Raj Talluri and Beatriz Vega, all of San Diego, Calif.
SENIOR 4.5 DIVISION:
A six-match slate on Friday would set the stage for which too teams were most likely to win the Senior 4.5 Division title. Heading into Saturday competition, Evergreen 4.5, of Long Valley, N.J., and Middle Solves the Riddle, of Los Angeles, were 2-0 on the weekend so far. Both teams continued to roll on Saturday by earning two more wins and setting up what was effectively a championship showdown on Sunday as the only two remaining undefeated teams in the division. With the title within their grasp, Middle Solves the Riddle, was tested but not bested by Evergreen 4.5, winning the match 28-24 as well as their first Nationals title. Led by captain Geri Brantley other winning teammates included Brigitte Champion, Victor Champion and Gregory Douglas, all of Los Angeles; Sherryl Chaffin, Palmdale, Calif.; Kirk Gillett, Downey, Calif.; Britani Golden, Studio City, Calif.; Eleazar Heracleopolis, Granada Hills, Calif.; Fitzroy Samoth, N. Hollywood, Calif.; and Iris Van Sciver, View Park, Calif.
SUPER SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:
In the Super Senior 3.5 Division, five teams would face off by playing four matches each to decide the 2017 champion. With some experienced teams in the mix, it was clear that every match was just as important as the next. Aces, of Miami, had a close contest to start the weekend, but they were able to outlast Purple Haze, of St. Louis, 27-22 to get their first win. Both teams would be victorious in their next matches as Purple Haze beat Fresno Tennis Club, of Kingsburg, Calif., and Aces defeated Intrepids Super Senior, of Miami Gardens, Fla. However, Aces stumbled in a Saturday afternoon matchup with Hits and Misses, of San Diego, recording their first loss. With both Aces and Purple Haze at 4-1 once the matches concluded on Sunday, it was Aces that took the top spot and the Nationals title. Led by returning captain Siriporn Burke, other titlist team members included Ana Pierce, Peter Roscia and Carlos Serrano, all of Miami; Rajni Agarwal, Coral Gables, Fla.; Jerome Bettis, Washington, D.C.; and Lavenia Ferguson, Novelty, Ohio.
SUPER SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION:
With six teams in contention for the Super Senior 4.0 Division title, the first couple of matches for each team on Friday were the most crucial. Both LOV2PLA of Virginia Beach, Va., and Swinging Seniors, of Playa Vista, Calif., were primed and ready to make a run at the championship after winning both of their Friday contests. Carrying that momentum into Saturday, LOV2PLA and Swinging Seniors bested their opponents to head into Sunday 4-0. In what would represent the title match, LOV2PLA concluded their undefeated campaign with a 32-16 victory over Swinging Seniors and scored their third consecutive Mylan WTT National title. Led by captain Doug Atkins, other winning members Manny Bagtas, Phil Meadows, Lynn Utecht and Brenda Wexel, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; Rachel Fritz, Alexandria, Va.; Roy Loehr, Chesapeake, Va.; and Carolyn Ware, Norfolk, Va.
OPEN DIVISION:
In the five-team Open Division, each team would get four matches to outplay their opponents and capture the title. Beginning on Friday, A Team Has No Name, of Rochester, Minn., and OC Dream Killers, of Dana Point, Calif., scored the first two wins of the weekend. On Saturday, OC Dream Killers continued their winning ways by edging A Team Has No Name in a close 24-22 battle and then adding a more comfortable win over Ironman Crew, of Irvine, Calif., later that afternoon. In their final match of the weekend, OC Dream Killers faced off with the winless Cattail Crocs, of Ellicott City, Md., which didn‘t make it easy for them. OC Dream Killers escaped with a 28-25 win and were awarded with the championship title. Led by captain Burton Gonzell, other championship teammates included Aaron Davenport, Orange, Calif.; Brynn Boren, Faye Sargent and Jamie Peisel, all of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; Greg Michaels and Yann Audebert, both of Laguna Beach, Calif.; and Laurent Dropsy, Irvine, Calif.
