2017 Mylan WTT National Qualifier Results: Landisville

During the weekend of August 11-13, nine teams added their name to the 2017 Nationals field at the second-to-last Mylan WTT Rec League National Qualifier of the season. With 42 teams in attendance and eight division titles being contested, the tournament, which was held at the Hempfield Sports Complex, in Landisville, Pa., made for an action-packed weekend. The championship teams advance to the Mylan WTT Nationals, Nov. 3-5, in Indian Wells, Calif.

The 2017 Mylan WTT Rec League National Qualifier schedule includes seven events leading up to the Mylan WTT Nationals in Indian Wells. The final NQ is set for September 15-17 at Heritage Park in Irvine, Calif.

3.5 Division:

With a Nationals bid up for grabs in the 3.5 Division, nine teams made the trip to Landisville to try to keep their championship dreams alive. After round-robin play, four teams made it into the semifinals. Smurfs, of Hawthorne, N.J., eliminated Mixed Masters, of Audubon, Pa., 34-17 while The Racq Pacq, of Randolph, N.J., defeated First State Racquets, of Wilmington, Del., 28-24. In the final match of the weekend, Smurfs continued their winning streak with a convincing 36-14 victory over The Racq Pacq to earn a trip to Indian Wells. Led by captain Michael Kim, other winning team members included: Sungrea Cho, Hannah Yoon and Hoon Lee, all of Ridgefield, N.J.; Judy Choi, Tenafly, N.J.; Luke Lim, Fair Lawn, N.J.; Teajoon, Kwon, Wayne, N.J.; Wanda Nadal, Glen Rock, N.J.; and Young Kwon, Basking Ridge, N.J.

The 3.0 Division team Raffa Let‘s DO this! also competed in the 3.5 Division and secured a spot in the Nationals this November. Teammates in attendance included Jo-Anne Raffa (non-playing captain) and Tim Brennan, both of Clifton Park, N.Y.; Charles Zarriello, Voorheesville, N.Y.; Christine Marro, Burnt Hills, N.Y.; James Best, Rensselaer, N.Y.; Jeffrey Denney, Linda Dygert and Jessica Lorusso, all of Schenectady, N.Y.; Penny Hill, Rotterdam, N.Y.; Teresa Rossi, Loudonville, N.Y.; and Samantha Swart, Altamont, N.Y.

4.0 Division:

In a competitive 4.0 Division, the stakes were high as 11 teams kicked off the weekend with round robin play. After losing their first match, NJ Sangria, of Florham Park, N.J., played their way into a semifinal and narrowly escaped Red Wedding, of Malden, Mass., to advance to the Sunday final. Meanwhile, Jersey Shore, of Neptune, N.J., remained undefeated through their semifinal after dismissing Whaqued! of Tennafly, NJ, 36-15. With a title on the line, the two New Jersey teams faced off, but it was Jersey Shore that ultimately prevailed 29-16 to secure a title and trip to Nationals. Led by captain Kenneth Leon, other teammates included Andrew Rosenbloom, Lincroft, N.J.; Christopher Miranda and Karen Shih, both of Freehold, N.J.; Jennifer Cane, Little Silver, N.J.; Julie Monahan, Avon, N.J.; Karen Potaski, Toms River, N.J.; Marcie Lynch, Marlboro, N.J.; Mostafa Moamen, Morganville, N.J.; and Ritch Belen, South River, N.J.

4.5 Division:

Four teams faced off in the 4.5 Division, but only one would secure their spot in the year-end championship this November. Capital District Smash of Schenectady, N.Y., rolled early and racked up two wins against Balls to the Walls, of Manasquan, N.J., and Mary Kathryn Gallagher Superstars, of Wyckoff, N.J. In their third and final match, Capital District Smash met Body Shots, of Wilmington, Del., which was also undefeated. In the end, Capital District Smash was able to outlast Body Shots 31-23 to capture the division title and a chance to go to Nationals. Led by captain Pat Bologna, other winning teammates included Beverly Swimm, Clifton Park, N.Y.; David Clay and Rachel Hodnett, both of Cohoes, N.Y.; Emily Laurilliard, Niskayuna, N.Y.; Matthew Vaughan, Albany, N.Y.; Patrick Bologna, Schenectady, N.Y.; Caroline Ennis, Fultonville, N.Y.; Kristen Ackerman, Stratford, Conn.

Senior 3.5 Division:

The Senior 3.5 Division had four teams in contention for the division title, but one set itself apart from the competition over three matches Friday and Saturday. Namaste‘nnis, of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., started off with victories against Raffa Living the Dream, of Clifton Park, N.J., and local team Hempfield Aces, of Lancaster, Pa. Scheduled to face the last remaining undefeated team, Babes & Boomers, of Hialeah, Fla., Namaste‘nnis used experience to scrape by 29-24 to win the title and score a trip to Indian Wells this fall. Led by captain Donald Yee, other titlist teammates included Lulu Liu, both of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; Andre Yang and Cindy Wang, both of Livingston, N.J.; Bobby Choe, Tenafly, N.J.; Haiqing Tang, Fort Lee, N.J.; Hongfa Zhu, Paramus, N.J.; Ling Zhang, Florham Park, N.J.; Sherry Shan, Montville, N.J.; Steven Yang, Lincoln Park, N.J.; and Ying fang Tsai, Old Tappan, N.J.

Senior 4.0 Division:

In the five-team Senior 4.0 Division, each team had four matches to try to make their way into the Nationals field. Evergreen 4.0, of Long Valley, N.J., began their campaign with three straight victories against Orange Crush, of Wilmington, Del.; Beltway Boomers, of Bethesda, Md.; and Sumar Smash, of Ephrata, Pa. With only one match left for the weekend, the other undefeated team was standing in between them and trip to Indian Wells. In their end, Evergreen 4.0 was able to score a 30-23 win over Kick Aces, of Clark, N.J., to punch their ticket to Nationals. Led by captain Wenyin Lin, other teammates included Andre Yang and Seon Kim, both of Livingston, N.J.; Claudia Rottach, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Dean Chan, Fair Lawn, N.J.; Haiqing Tang, Fort Lee, N.J.; Lucy DiCostanzo, New York, N.Y.; Melinda Trang, Staten Island, N.Y.; Sherry Shan, Montville, N.J.; and Yoko Kokabu, Wyckoff, N.J.

Senior 4.5 Division:

The Senior 4.5 Division had only two teams, Evergreen 4.5, of Long Valley, N.J., and hometown team Nitjays, from Landisville, Pa. With two matches on tap for the teams to determine who would advance to the year-end finals, Evergreen 4.5 made scored back-to-back wins to take the title. Led by captain, Wenyin Lin, other titlists included Claudia Rottach, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Dean Chan, Fair Lawn, N.J.; Junji Miyake, Allendale, N.J.; Melinda Trang, Staten Island, N.Y.; Ping Yu, Fort Lee, N.J.; Yoko Kokabu and Yukiko Okuda, both of Wyckoff, N.J.; Zhi Du, Hillsdale, N.K.; and Lucy DiCostanzo, New York, N.Y.

Super Senior 3.5 Division:

It was a four-team field for the Super Senior 3.5 Division making each squad three matches away from a bid to Nationals. The Aces, of Miami, came into the weekend on a mission scoring two double-digit wins over Smashers, of Lancaster, Pa., and NY Silverstreaks, of Troy, N.Y. Their final opponent, Lobsters, of Livingston, N.J., had also picked up two victories so far, and it came down to the third match to decide which team was Nationals-bound. In their closest match of the weekend, Lobsters gave them a challenge but ultimately fell to Aces 28-19. Led by captain Siriporn Burke, other team members included Ana Victoria Pierce and Carlos Serrano, all of Miami; Jerome Bettis, Washington, D.C.; Lavenia Ferguson, Novelty, Ohio; Peter Roscia, Hialeah, Fla.; Rajni Agarwal, Coral Gables, Fla.; and Roger Bell, Pembroke Pines, Fla.

Super Senior 4.0 Division:

A pair of matches separated two Super Senior 4.0 teams from advancing to the final tournament of the year in Indian Wells. Heaters, of Miami, and 60 Passing Shots, of Mount Joy, Pa., played both of their matches Saturday. In the first contest, 60 Passing Shots won 32-20. With the title in their sights, 60 Passing Shots captured the second victory they needed to win the division and earn a bid to Nationals. Led by captain Dennis Keller, other winning teammates included Donald Musser, Mount Joy, Pa.; Amber Roxanne, Kroh, Ephrata, Pa.; Chanh Nguyen, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Jautrite Ziedonis, Lititz, Pa.; Joseph Donell, Landisville, Pa.; Nancy Henry, Columbia, Pa.; Pat Giles, Sinking Spring, Pa.; and Robert Woods, East Early, Pa.
