Senior teams from Maryland and Virginia captured titles in five divisions at the Mylan WTT Rec League National Qualifier in Virginia Beach, Va. The championship teams advance to the Mylan WTT Nationals, Nov. 3-5, in Indian Wells, Calif.
Fireballs of Virginia Beach, Va., claimed the Senior 3.5 Division title to earn their first trip to the National Finals this fall. Captained by Judy Isak of Virginia Beach, Va., team members include David Cline of Chesapeake, Va., and Rosanne Simon, Susan Hill, Taeko Fukuda, Thomas Werner, Whit Hill, William Simon, Carolyn Werner, Chris Munroe, all of Virginia Beach, Va.
Another first time finalist is the Senior 4.0 Division championship team, Topspin Lobers of Silver Spring, Md. The Lobers went undefeated throughout the weekend to capture the division title. Team captain Tony Papel led the team which also includes Beth Papel of Silver Spring, Md.; Edgar Bernal of Rockville, Md.; Guillermo Osorio of Olney, Md.; Jackie Gorinson of Silver Spring, Md.; Tony Jurlano of Silver Spring, Md.; Dina Cuttier of Falls Church, Va.; and Rachel Fritz of Alexandria, Va.
Some familiar faces took home the Senior 4.5 Division title as Short Skirts Long Racquets of Virginia Beach, Va., earned a return trip to Nationals with an undefeated run at the National Qualifier. SSLR won two showdowns with VA Acers of Fredericksburg, Va., by a total of five games to win the division. SSLR team captain David Sloane of Virginia Beach, Va., was joined by Shaun Morse of Chesapeake, Va.; Michael Heisler of Chesapeake, Va.; Sheryl Raulston of Franklin, Va.; and Miki Mizuki, Molly Nissman, Thomas Kuhrt, Kathy Courage, Lionel Jacob and Tijen Ireland, all of Virginia Beach, Va.
Captain Charlie Pittman of Virginia Beach, Val, helped the Pittballs win the Super Senior 3.5 Division and qualify for Nationals for the first time. Team members include Cynthia Futrell, Daniel Weckstein of Chesapeake, Va.; Debi Karst of Chesapeake, Va.; and Donna Bosze, James Futrell, Maarten Fleurke, Margaret Pittman, Mike Hayes, and Sandra Claxton, all of Virginia Beach, Va.
The 2016 Super Senior 4.0 National Champion LOV2PLA of Virginia Beach, Va. will have the opportunity to defend their title after winning the division again at the Qualifier round. LOV2PLA team members include captain Doug Atkins of Virginia Beach, Va.; Barbara Langbord of Virginia Beach, Va.; Brenda Wexel of Virginia Beach, Va.; Carolyn Ware of Norfolk, Va.; Ed Flanders of Portsmouth, Va.; Lynn Utecht of Virginia Beach, Va.; Manny Bagtas of Virginia Beach, Va.; Phil Meadows of Virginia Beach, Va.; Rachel Fritz of Alexandria, Va.; and Roy Loehr of Chesapeake, Va.
