Washington Kastles rookie Frances Tiafoe reached his first ATP final of any kind over the weekend and is WTT.com‘s selection for Mylan WTT Family MVP this week.
Tiafoe teamed up with Dustin Brown at the US Men‘s Clay Court Championship in Houston. The pair, who gained entry via a wild card, ousted second seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in their team debut and later defeated fellow Kastle Sam Querrey and Kevin Anderson in the semifinals. Tiafoe and Brown ultimately lost a close title match to Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos, who rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory. Peralta and Zeballos also topped Bob and Mike Bryan (Kastles) in the semifinals.
Longtime Kastles‘ star Martina Hingis matched Tiafoe‘s run, partnering countrywoman Timea Bacsinszky to the Biel Bienne final. The Swiss tandem, the reigning Olympic silver medalists, finished runner-up to second-seeded Su-Wei Hsieh and Monica Niculescu.
Jack Sock (Springfield Lasers), who flew directly from Brisbane to Houston after representing the United States in Davis Cup, advanced to the semifinals in Houston. Though he went down to Mylan WTT Family member and eventual champion Steve Johnson, Sock moved up to a career-high No. 14 in Monday‘s ATP Singles Rankings.
