The moments that made us

1973

BUILT TO GROW THE SPORT

World Team Tennis launched with a radical idea: men and women competing together, on the same team, for the same prize. Co-founded by Billie Jean King and others, WTT challenged the norms within sports, championing a commitment to gender equality, innovation, and entertainment even further.

From the beginning, this wasn’t traditional tennis. It was louder, faster, more inclusive, and built entirely around fan entertainment and fun.

1974

THE FIRST MIXED-GENDER PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE

In 1974, World Team Tennis burst onto the scene with a new energy to professional sports. Men and women competed side by side as equals, representing their cities in packed indoor arenas and creating a faster, louder, more exciting version of tennis.

1975

WHEN MUSIC AND TENNIS COLLIDED

Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom” became one of the defining cultural moments in World Team Tennis history, written for Billie Jean King and the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Long before modern sports embraced entertainment culture, World Team Tennis blended tennis, music, fashion, and celebrity into one experience.

The league wasn’t just influencing sports. It was influencing culture.

1978

BEFORE SPORTS DID ENTERTAINMENT

World Team Tennis pioneered many fan experiences now standard across modern sports.

Music between points. Vocal crowds. Fans moving during play. Player’s names on jerseys. Mid-match entertainment. Post-match autographs.

Tennis became something fans could feel, not just watch.

1981

THE LEAGUE BUILT BY LEGENDS

More than 20 world number ones competed in World Team Tennis, including Rod Laver, Chris Evert, Bjorn Borg, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Venus & Serena Williams, Jimming Connors, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi.

It gave the sport’s biggest personalities freedom to compete with more emotion and a closer connection to fans.

1984

BILLIE JEAN KING MAKES HISTORY AGAIN

In 1984, Billie Jean King became Commissioner of World Team Tennis, the first woman commissioner in professional sports.

2005

THE LEAGUE THAT BROUGHT TECHNOLOGY TO TENNIS

World Team Tennis introduced In-Match Coaches Challenges in 2005, years before replay systems became the standard across professional tennis.

Innovation wasn’t a feature of the league. It was part of its DNA.

2015

THE GAME MOVED FASTER HERE FIRST

In 2015, World Team Tennis introduced the on-court service clock, modernizing the pace of tennis years before the wider tours.

No-ad scoring, shortened sets, and Supertiebreakers were tested here first.

2017

TENNIS GOT MIC’D UP

World Team Tennis became the first professional tennis league to introduce live player microphones during competition.

Fans got closer to the emotion, pressure, and personality of the players.

2018

THE FUTURE OF OFFICIATING STARTED HERE

In 2018, World Team Tennis became the first professional tennis competition to fully implement Hawk-Eye Live across every match.

No line judges. Just players, technology, and the future of officiating.

The rest of tennis followed.

2026

A CULTURAL ORIGINAL RETURNS

More than 50 years later, World Team Tennis returns for a new generation.

The same innovative DNA reimagined through sport, fashion, music, entertainment, and culture. A modern format built for today’s fans while honoring one of tennis’ boldest legacies.

This isn’t nostalgia. It’s the next chapter.

BUILT TO GROW THE SPORT

World Team Tennis launched with a radical idea: men and women competing together, on the same team, for the same prize. Co-founded by Billie Jean King and Larry King, WTT challenged everything the sport thought it had to be and created a new blueprint for what tennis could become.

From the beginning, this wasn’t country club tennis. It was louder, faster, more inclusive, and built for entertainment.

ICONIC Teams

New York

New  York  Apples

One of the league’s original franchises, the New York Apples became synonymous with the energy and spectacle of early World Team Tennis. Playing in one of the world’s biggest markets, the Apples helped establish the league’s identity as a faster, louder, and more entertainment-driven version of tennis.

The franchise featured legendary names including Billie Jean King and Vitas Gerulaitis, bringing star power and credibility to one of the league’s most recognizable brands.

A team built around personality, pressure, and the unmistakable atmosphere of New York.

Los Angeles

LA  Strings

The LA Strings embodied the glamor and cultural crossover that made World Team Tennis feel different from every other tennis property of its era.

Owned by Dr. Jerry Buss and featuring players such as Chris Evert and Ilie Nastase, the Strings became one of the defining teams of the league — blending elite tennis with the entertainment energy of Los Angeles during the late 70s and early 80s.

More than a tennis team, the Strings felt like part of LA culture itself.

Chicago

Chicago  Aces

The Chicago Aces had two stints in WTT marked more by their classic Chicago branding than success on the court.

Their striking green identity, built around a bold lowercase “aces” wordmark and clean geometric styling, captured the modern, design-forward energy that made World Team Tennis visually distinct from traditional tennis.

The Aces represented a different side of tennis culture: urban, contemporary, and unapologetically stylish, proving that a team could leave a lasting impression through identity, atmosphere, and personality as much as results.

Boston

Boston  lobsters

Few teams became more closely associated with World Team Tennis than the Boston Lobsters. Across multiple eras of the league, the Lobsters built one of the strongest fan cultures in team tennis.

Owned by Robert Kraft in the 70s, the team featured legends including Martina Navratilova, helping create one of the league’s most iconic identities.

Passionate crowds, bold branding, and a true sense of community made the Lobsters one of the defining teams in league history.

Houston

houston  ez-riders

The Houston EZ-Riders perfectly captured the rebellious spirit of 1970s World Team Tennis. With one of the league’s most distinctive names and iconic logos, the franchise reflected an era when tennis became louder, more expressive, and unapologetically unconventional.

The team featured legendary players including John Newcombe, helping cement the league’s credibility during its formative years.

The EZ-Riders proved that tennis did not need to look traditional to be world class.

Florida

Florida  flamingos

Bright, playful, and unmistakably South Florida, the Florida Flamingos became one of the most memorable visual identities in World Team Tennis history.

The team featured stars including Chris Evert and Cliff Drysdale, two of the sport’s biggest personalities during tennis’ cultural boom in the 1970s and 1980s.

The Flamingos represented everything that made the league unique: color, charisma, entertainment, and star power.
